AutoCAD Annotative Text Is the Wrong Size: How to Fix It

If annotative text is huge, tiny or missing, do not change viewport scale first. Check the text style/object's Annotative setting, current annotation scale and the scale representations assigned to the object.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Fix annotative text size without damaging a correctly scaled viewport.

Where to start: Open the Layout where the text looks wrong and identify one problem text object.

Beginner rule: If the model view is already at the correct scale but text, dimensions or symbols look wrong, do not change the viewport scale first. Check the annotation setting or object representation separately.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Confirm viewport scale

Where: Select viewport border > Viewport Scale.

Do this: Make sure the model view itself is at the intended scale.

Check: You are not fixing annotation for a wrong viewport.

Step 2 — Select the text

Where: Inside model / Properties.

Do this: Check whether the text or its style is Annotative.

Check: You know which scaling system controls it.

Step 3 — Read annotation scale

Where: Status bar / viewport annotation scale.

Do this: Compare it with the intended view scale.

Check: A mismatch is visible or ruled out.

Step 4 — Check object scales

Where: Annotative Object Scale / Properties.

Do this: Confirm the object supports the scale used by the viewport.

Check: Required scale representation exists.

Step 5 — Check paper text height

Where: Text style/object properties.

Do this: Verify the intended plotted text height rather than manually shrinking the model text.

Check: The office standard is clear.

Step 6 — Preview all affected views

Where: Ctrl+P > Preview.

Do this: Check every viewport that uses that annotation.

Check: Text size and visibility are consistent.

Beginner example

A note looks correct in a 1:50 detail but disappears in a 1:100 plan. The likely problem is not the viewport scale; the annotative note may simply lack a 1:100 representation.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

Annotative does not mean ‘automatically correct in every view’

The object still needs the appropriate scale representation and a sensible paper-size style.

Do not fix it by changing model geometry scale

Changing the viewport or model to make text look right creates a new plotting problem.

Mixed standards create confusing sheets

Combining annotative and manually scaled text can produce inconsistent plotted heights across viewports.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

For repeatable annotation and linetype output, record the office values and styles instead of fixing each sheet by eye. Keep annotation scales, text/dimension styles, LTSCALE/PSLTSCALE/MSLTSCALE rules and any required REGEN step in the CAD standard, then confirm the result in Plot Preview on a known-good sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Why is annotative text invisible at some scales?

Annotative objects display only at supported scale representations unless visibility settings override that behavior.

Should I make every text object annotative?

Use the office standard. Annotative workflows are powerful, but consistency matters more than mixing methods.

Can I copy a correctly configured annotative text object?

Yes, but verify its style and supported scales after copying.
