Civil 3D Create Sheets Wizard: Plan/Profile Layouts Step by Step

After view frames exist, Civil 3D's Create Sheets wizard creates the actual layouts used for construction documents. This is the stage where template quality, profile-view options and sheet-set choices become visible.

Beginner takeaway: Do not start Create Sheets until the view frames and production template are already correct.

What this workflow is really doing

Create Sheets converts the approved view-frame group into layouts and can organize those layouts in a sheet set. Profile views can also be created as part of the workflow.

Step-by-step workflow

Step 1 — Select the frame group

Where: Output > Plan Production > Create Sheets

Do this: Choose the view frame group to turn into layouts.

Check: The intended project frames are selected.

Step 2 — Choose sheet destination

Where: Create Sheets wizard

Do this: Decide whether sheets belong in the current drawing or new drawing files when the workflow allows it.

Check: The file organization matches the project standard.

Step 3 — Review profile-view options

Where: Profile Views page

Do this: Use the approved profile view/band settings.

Check: Profile extents fit the intended viewport.

Step 4 — Set Sheet Set options

Where: Create Sheets wizard

Do this: Create or add to the intended sheet set.

Check: The DST/Sheet Set Manager organization is predictable.

Step 5 — Generate and inspect

Where: Finish

Do this: Open several generated layouts, not just the first one.

Check: Plan, profile, match lines and title blocks are correct across the run.

Practical example

For a 20-sheet roadway package, inspect sheets 1, 10 and 20 immediately after generation. If the middle sheet has a clipped profile, stop and repair the production setup before staff start manually editing twenty layouts.

Good office standard

Regeneration should be cheaper than hand repair. Keep the template, frame group and sheet-set configuration under CAD-management control.

Frequently asked questions

Should Civil 3D production sheets be printed with Fit to Paper?

Not for scale-critical issue sheets. Build the Layout for the real paper size and output it at 100%; use Fit only for clearly identified reference/check prints.

Should I manually repair every generated sheet?

Usually no. If the same defect repeats, correct the shared view-frame, template, style or Page Setup source and regenerate/update systematically.

What should I test before a full publish?

At minimum, test the first, a middle and the last sheet plus one sheet for every paper size or special content type.
