AutoCAD PDF Lineweights Are Wrong: Causes and Fixes
If PDF lineweights are too thin, too thick or all the same, compare the selected CTB or STB, Plot Object Lineweights and the object or layer plot-style source before changing drawing scale.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Determine the first stage where the lineweight hierarchy becomes wrong, then correct the setting that controls it.
Where to start: Use one affected Layout and, if possible, one known-good PDF from the same project.
Beginner rule: Always compare AutoCAD Preview with the saved PDF. If Preview is correct, avoid changing the drawing for a viewer or printer problem.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Check Plot Preview
Where: AutoCAD > Ctrl+P > Preview.
Do this: Look specifically for thin, heavy or flat lineweight hierarchy.
Check: You know whether the problem already exists before PDF creation.
Step 2 — Check the Page Setup
Where: PAGESETUP > Modify.
Do this: Confirm PDF PC3, paper, Plot Area, 1:1 Layout scale and CTB/STB.
Check: The common output controls are known.
Step 3 — Select two test objects
Where: Drawing > Properties.
Do this: Choose one intended thin and one intended heavy object.
Check: Their source properties differ.
Step 4 — Check CTB or STB
Where: PAGESETUP > Plot Style Table.
Do this: Confirm approved table and mappings.
Check: Expected plot styles are active.
Step 5 — Check plot options
Where: PAGESETUP > Plot Options.
Do this: Review Plot Object Lineweights and Plot with Plot Styles per office standard.
Check: Lineweight output is enabled correctly.
Step 6 — Create calibration PDF
Where: Plot to approved PDF preset.
Do this: Compare labeled lineweight samples.
Check: You can identify the controlling mapping.
Beginner example
If Plot Preview shows the correct thin/heavy hierarchy but the saved PDF does not, focus on PDF creation or viewing. If Preview is already wrong, stay inside AutoCAD and trace the Page Setup, CTB/STB and object/layer lineweight controls.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
The first bad stage matters
Model/Layout → Preview → PDF → paper. The first stage that becomes wrong tells you where to focus.
A known-good reference saves time
Compare Page Setup, PDF preset and final file rather than guessing.
One symptom can have several causes
The steps isolate the responsible stage before you change anything.

Common problems and what to check first
| What you see | What may be causing it | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| All lines same thickness | Shared CTB/STB mapping flattens hierarchy | Compare two known samples. |
| One color wrong | CTB row wrong | Inspect that ACI mapping. |
| One named style wrong | STB definition wrong | Inspect named style. |
| PDF correct, paper wrong | Printer rendering | Do not change CAD standard first. |
When you need a more repeatable workflow
Keep representative reference PDFs for scale, fonts, lineweights, images and hatches. When a PDF preset, AutoCAD version or device environment changes, compare against those references before project-wide changes.

Frequently asked questions
Does PDF DPI control lineweight?
The plotted hierarchy comes from drawing and plot-style settings; quality can affect rendering detail.
Should I change viewport scale?
No.
Best QA tool?
