Roll Paper in AutoCAD: How to Set Custom Width and Length
Large-format plotters often use fixed roll widths with variable sheet lengths. Select the real plotter/PC3, create or choose a supported roll-fed media definition, and verify cutter/margin behavior with a test plot.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Configure a long custom roll sheet without using Fit to Paper.
Where to start: Know the installed roll width, required drawing length and device maximum length.
Beginner rule: The roll width is physical. If a 24-in roll is loaded, do not define 36-in paper and expect the driver to fix it.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Confirm loaded roll
Where: Physical plotter / driver status.
Do this: Check media width/type.
Check: Actual roll is known.
Step 2 — Select plotter
Where: PAGESETUP > Printer/Plotter.
Do this: Choose real large-format device/PC3.
Check: Roll options are visible.
Step 3 — Check existing roll sizes
Where: Paper Size.
Do this: Look for suitable width/length.
Check: Need for custom length is known.
Step 4 — Create/edit custom roll media
Where: PC3 Custom Paper Sizes or driver Custom Properties.
Do this: Enter supported width and length; choose Roll-Fed where applicable.
Check: Device accepts media.
Step 5 — Set printable area
Where: Media/driver settings.
Do this: Use real leading/trailing/side margins.
Check: Title block is printable.
Step 6 — Apply to Page Setup
Where: PAGESETUP > Paper Size.
Do this: Select custom roll media.
Check: Layout matches long sheet.
Step 7 — Preview and physical test
Where: Preview > plotter.
Do this: Check rotation, cutter and border.
Check: Long sheet outputs correctly.
Beginner example
A profile needs 24 × 72 in on a 24-in roll. Define/select a 24-in-wide roll media with a 72-in length only if the plotter supports it, then test leading and trailing margins.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
Roll width and length are different constraints
Installed roll controls one dimension; driver/PC3 can often define cut length.
Roll-Fed is part of the media definition
Supported custom workflows can specify roll source.
Long plots expose margins/rotation issues
Physical test is essential.

Common problems and what to check first
| What you see | What may be causing it | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| Custom length rejected | Beyond device maximum | Use supported length or split sheet. |
| Plot rotates | Driver optimizes roll usage | Check orientation/driver. |
| Extra blank paper | Media length/content extents too large | Check Page Setup. |
| Border clips | Roll margins too small | Adjust printable area. |
When you need a more repeatable workflow

Frequently asked questions
Can a 24-in roll make a 24 × 100 in plot?
Only if the plotter/driver supports that length.
Should I use ARCH D for a long profile?
Not if the project genuinely requires a long custom sheet.
Do I need a PMP?
Relevant non-system PC3 workflows can store custom media in PMP.
