How to Set Annotation Scale in AutoCAD

Set annotation scale from the status bar for Model Space or from the selected Layout viewport. The correct annotation scale lets annotative text, dimensions and symbols display at their intended paper size.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Set the current annotation scale for a model view or Layout viewport.

Where to start: Decide whether you are setting annotation scale in Model Space or for a specific Layout viewport.

Beginner rule: If the model view is already at the correct scale but text, dimensions or symbols look wrong, do not change the viewport scale first. Check the annotation setting or object representation separately.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Identify the target space

Where: Bottom tabs > Model or Layout.

Do this: Choose Model Space for general model annotation work, or select the specific Layout viewport.

Check: You know which view the scale will affect.

Step 2 — Find Annotation Scale

Where: Status bar > Annotation Scale control.

Do this: Read the current scale before changing it.

Check: You have a before value.

Step 3 — Choose the intended scale

Where: Annotation Scale list.

Do this: Select the scale used by the view, for example 1:50 or 1:100.

Check: The current annotation scale updates.

Step 4 — Inspect annotative objects

Where: Select text/dimension/block > Properties.

Do this: Confirm Annotative = Yes where intended.

Check: The object participates in annotation scaling.

Step 5 — Add another scale if needed

Where: Annotative Object Scale / OBJECTSCALE workflow.

Do this: Add the scale representation needed for another viewport.

Check: The object can appear in the required views.

Step 6 — Preview at paper size

Where: Layout > Ctrl+P > Preview.

Do this: Judge text/dimension size on the actual sheet.

Check: Annotation is readable at the plotted scale.

Beginner example

A note must appear on both 1:100 and 1:50 viewports. Make it annotative and ensure it supports both scales, then check the note in each viewport before issue.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

Annotation scale is about paper readability

The aim is for annotation to plot at a consistent readable height despite different model-view scales.

Annotative objects need supported scales

An annotative object created at one scale may need additional scale representations before it appears in another viewport.

Use a controlled office style

Text/dimension styles should define the intended paper height so users are not manually resizing notes per viewport.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

For repeatable annotation and linetype output, record the office values and styles instead of fixing each sheet by eye. Keep annotation scales, text/dimension styles, LTSCALE/PSLTSCALE/MSLTSCALE rules and any required REGEN step in the CAD standard, then confirm the result in Plot Preview on a known-good sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can one annotative object support several scales?

Yes. Additional annotation scales can be assigned to supported annotative objects.

Do Paper Space notes need annotation scale?

Paper Space annotation is often created at full paper size because the Layout is already the sheet.

What system variable stores current annotation scale?

AutoCAD uses CANNOSCALE for the current annotation scale.
