What this calculator does
Architectural scales are often written as a paper-inch value representing one real foot. Internally, each scale has an exact dimensionless ratio—for example 1/4 inch = 1 foot is 1:48.
Example
A 24-foot wall at 1/4 inch = 1 foot should measure 6 inches on the plotted sheet: 24 feet × 1/4 inch per foot = 6 inches.
How to use the result
- Use a known long wall or grid distance for verification.
- Print or view the PDF at 100% when measuring.
- Do not substitute the nearest metric ratio unless the drawing standard explicitly allows it.
Frequently asked questions
What ratio is 1/4 inch = 1 foot?
It is exactly 1:48 because one foot contains 12 inches and 1/4 inch represents those 12 inches.
What ratio is 1/8 inch = 1 foot?
It is exactly 1:96.
Is 1/4 inch = 1 foot the same as 1:50?
No. They are close, but 1:48 and 1:50 are different scales.
