Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Create a PDF with the correct sheet size, scale, order and plotting appearance.

Where to go: AutoCAD Layout > Output > Plot for one sheet, or Output > Publish for several sheets.

Beginner rule: Change one thing at a time. After each important change, use Preview or create one test PDF/print before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in order

Step 1 — Make one Layout plot correctly first

Where: Open the Layout > Output > Plot > Page Setup Manager.

Do this: Before batch publishing, make one sheet correct with its Page Setup, paper size, scale and CTB/STB.

Check: Plot Preview should already be correct.

Step 2 — Choose the AutoCAD PDF device

Where: Page Setup > Printer/Plotter > Name.

Do this: Use the approved AutoCAD PDF .pc3 for your purpose, such as General Documentation, then choose the exact paper size.

Check: The page size in Preview should match the Layout.

Step 3 — Create one test PDF

Where: Press Ctrl+P / Plot > Preview > OK.

Do this: Save one PDF and open it before publishing dozens of sheets.

Check: The PDF should have the right page size, orientation and lineweights.

Step 4 — Check scale before publishing

Where: Open the PDF in a viewer.

Do this: Measure a known distance or print one page at Actual Size / 100%.

Check: The PDF must prove that the digital output is correct before you blame a physical printer.

Step 5 — Publish multiple sheets

Where: AutoCAD > Output tab > Publish.

Do this: Add/select the required sheets, verify each sheet has the intended Page Setup, choose the required PDF output and file organization.

Check: The sheet list should contain only the layouts you actually want.

Step 6 — Verify the finished set

Where: Open the resulting PDF.

Do this: Check page count, sheet order, names, paper sizes and at least one scale-critical page.

Check: Do not distribute the set until these basic checks pass.

A coordinated drawing set can be published as one multi-sheet PDF after each sheet uses a tested Page Setup. Check page order, names, dimensions, line hierarchy and fonts on a small subset before producing the complete issue package.

Correct PDF, wrong paper print

If the CAD-generated PDF has the correct page dimensions and measured scale but the physical sheet is wrong, keep the CAD file unchanged and move later in the print process: verify Actual Size or 100%, the selected physical paper, printer-driver scaling and printable area.

PDF as a controlled master

For many offices, a tested PDF is the issue artifact and the physical plot is derived from it. This creates a stable checkpoint between CAD configuration and the printer driver, simplifying reprints and external distribution.

Multi-sheet publishing

A multi-sheet PDF improves set navigation and preserves order, while separate PDFs can fit transmittal systems or per-sheet document control. Choose the model based on later in the print process requirements, not habit.

Batch reliability

When batch output does not match manual output, inspect Page Setup selection, Sheet Set overrides and the PDF device used by the batch. Autodesk documents cases where customized settings behave differently during batch plotting, so repeat the issue on a small subset.

Quality verification

A professional PDF check should include page dimensions, scale, line hierarchy, fonts, images, clipping, bookmarks/layers when required, and a visual comparison against Plot Preview.

For large drawing sets, standardize Page Setups, PDF naming, output folder rules and quality checks. Verify a small subset first. Keep the final PDF as a controlled digital master before it is sent to physical printers.

Why is my AutoCAD PDF not to scale?

Check the CAD Page Setup first, then verify that the PDF viewer is not applying Fit, Shrink or another scaling option when the file is printed.

Should I create one PDF or one file per sheet?

Both are valid. A combined file is convenient for review and distribution, while separate files may be required by document-control or client standards.

Why are some CAD PDFs very large?

High-resolution raster images, transparency, dense hatches, complex geometry and some font or plotting choices can all increase file size.
