How to Publish Multiple DWG Files to PDF in AutoCAD

AutoCAD PUBLISH can assemble Layouts from multiple DWG files and output them as one multi-page PDF or multiple single-page PDFs. Standardize the drawings first, then build and save the publish list.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Create a PDF package from sheets stored in several drawing files.

Where to start: Save all DWGs and confirm production Layouts have valid named Page Setups.

Beginner rule: Add only finished Layouts. Model tabs and draft Layouts can enter the Publish list if files are added carelessly.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Open PUBLISH

Where: Output > Batch Plot / PUBLISH.

Do this: Open the Publish dialog.

Check: Sheet list is visible.

Step 2 — Add drawings

Where: Publish dialog > Add Sheets/Drawings.

Do this: Select DWGs and choose Layouts, plus Model only if intentionally required.

Check: Required sheets are loaded.

Step 3 — Remove unwanted sheets

Where: Sheet list.

Do this: Delete Model tabs, drafts and duplicates.

Check: Only issue sheets remain.

Step 4 — Order the package

Where: Move Up / Move Down.

Do this: Arrange sheets according to the index.

Check: Sequence is correct.

Step 5 — Inspect Page Setups

Where: Page Setup column / Selected Sheet Details.

Do this: Check paper size and scale; assign approved setup if needed.

Check: Drawings are compatible with the batch.

Step 6 — Choose PDF preset and options

Where: Publish To > PDF / Publish Options.

Do this: Set packaging and approved PDF data options.

Check: Output policy is correct.

Step 7 — Save DSD if recurring

Where: Save Sheet List.

Do this: Save the assembled list.

Check: The batch can be reproduced.

Step 8 — Publish and review

Where: Publish > PDF.

Do this: Check page count, order and representative output.

Check: The multi-DWG package is complete.

Beginner example

A project has plans in A-Plans.dwg, sections in A-Sections.dwg and details in A-Details.dwg. Add the production Layouts from all three, save the list as a DSD and republish after revisions.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

PUBLISH is not limited to one DWG

The sheet list can include Layouts from several files.

Page Setup consistency matters more across files

Different DWGs often carry old printer or CTB settings.

DSD makes the package repeatable

The list can be saved and loaded later.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

For recurring issue packages, treat the DSD and named Page Setups as project infrastructure and revalidate them when drawing paths or standards change.
