AutoCAD Batch Publish Stops or Fails: Troubleshooting Guide
When a large AutoCAD publish job stops, skips sheets or fails, read Plot and Publish Details, identify the first failing sheet, test it alone, then compare its Page Setup and external dependencies with a known-good sheet.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Identify the first failing sheet or shared configuration and restart publishing with evidence.
Where to start: Keep the failed Publish job details available and note the last successful sheet.
Beginner rule: Reduce the problem. One failing sheet in a 100-sheet batch is easier to diagnose alone than inside the full package.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Open Plot and Publish Details
Where: Status-bar plotter icon / Output > View Details.
Do this: Read warnings and errors.
Check: First failing sheet is known.
Step 2 — Open the failing Layout
Where: Source DWG Layout.
Do this: Preview or plot it by itself.
Check: You know whether the sheet can output alone.
Step 3 — Compare Page Setup
Where: PAGESETUP / PUBLISH details.
Do this: Compare with a nearby successful sheet.
Check: Device, paper, CTB/STB and scale differences are visible.
Step 4 — Check external content
Where: Xrefs, images, fonts and device paths.
Do this: Resolve missing dependencies.
Check: Failing sheet has required resources.
Step 5 — Try a small subset
Where: PUBLISH.
Do this: Publish failed sheet plus one good sheet.
Check: Fix works in batch conditions.
Step 6 — Use foreground if helpful
Where: Publish in Background.
Do this: Disable background during diagnosis if clearer.
Check: Failure behavior is easier to observe.
Step 7 — Republish full set
Where: PUBLISH or DSD.
Do this: Run complete package after subset succeeds.
Check: Full batch finishes.
Beginner example
A 75-sheet publish stops around sheet 42. Open Plot and Publish Details, identify the failing Layout, correct its missing image or wrong Page Setup, then publish a three-sheet subset before rerunning all 75.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
Logs are better than guessing
AutoCAD records warnings and errors.
The first failure is a strong clue
Later missing pages may be consequences.
Small-subset testing protects time
You avoid rerunning dozens of good sheets for every test.

Common problems and what to check first
| What you see | What may be causing it | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| One sheet always fails | Local drawing or setup issue | Test it alone. |
| Every sheet fails immediately | Shared output device/path/permissions | Check global environment. |
| Some sheets skipped | List/reference/publish error | Read details. |
| Works foreground, fails background | Process/environment interaction | Use controlled mode. |
When you need a more repeatable workflow
For large recurring packages, archive the DSD, publish log and reference PDF together so later changes can be compared.
