Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Connect a CAD setup to a physical printer or large-format plotter without confusing device problems with drawing problems.

Where to go: First test the printer outside CAD; then configure it in AutoCAD through Page Setup Manager.

Beginner rule: Change one thing at a time. After each important change, use Preview or create one test PDF/print before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in order

Step 1 — Identify the exact device

Where: Read the model name on the printer/plotter or in the operating system printer list.

Do this: Do not troubleshoot from a generic family name only. Record the exact model.

Check: You should know the exact device before looking for drivers or paper limits.

Step 2 — Print a simple system test

Where: Operating system printer settings / manufacturer utility.

Do this: Print a basic test outside CAD.

Check: If the device cannot print outside CAD, fix the device/driver/network first.

Step 3 — Check the driver and paper list

Where: Printer properties or manufacturer driver.

Do this: Confirm the expected roll/sheet sizes and orientation are available.

Check: The driver should expose the paper you need before AutoCAD can use it reliably.

Step 4 — Open the AutoCAD Layout setup

Where: AutoCAD > Layout > Output > Plot > Page Setup Manager > Modify.

Do this: Choose the system printer or approved PC3, then choose the same paper size/orientation.

Check: AutoCAD and the driver should now agree.

Step 5 — Plot a calibration sheet

Where: Plot a small sheet with border, scale bar, text and several lineweights.

Do this: Check clipping, rotation, scale and line quality.

Check: Document the settings that pass so other users do not rebuild them differently.

A successful operating-system test page proves that the queue and device can communicate, but it does not prove that CAD is using the same driver or media definition. Compare the system device with the selected CAD device or PC3 before rebuilding the drawing.

Moving standards to a new workstation

Copying a PC3 and CTB may be insufficient if the new computer uses a differently named printer queue or driver package. Recreate the complete dependency chain, then run the same calibration sheet used to approve the original workstation.

How CAD settings reach a physical plotter

Driver versus PC3

A PC3 is a CAD configuration layer, not a substitute for every driver dependency. Moving a PC3 to another workstation can fail when the underlying printer name, driver version or paper forms differ.

HP-GL/2 and raster paths

Some technical plotters support page-description languages or CAD-specific modes such as HP-GL/2, while driver-based raster/vector workflows can also be used. The best path depends on device support and the drawing content.

Family documentation

HP DesignJet, Canon imagePROGRAF and Epson SureColor families include many generations. CADPlotting will not claim one universal margin or driver behavior for an entire brand; model-specific claims will cite the model manual.

Calibration sheet

Every new plotter deployment should include a test file with border offsets, a scale bar, lineweight ladder, grayscale/screening, text, hatches, images and orientation markers. This converts subjective “looks wrong” feedback into measurable checks.

For shared office plotters

For shared devices, document the exact driver package, queue name, standard paper list, approved Page Setups and last test date. A copied PC3 alone is not a complete deployment standard if the underlying driver or printer name changes.
