CAD Printing & Plotting Troubleshooting
When a CAD plot is wrong, do not change ten settings at once. First find the earliest place where the problem appears: in the drawing, in Plot Preview, in the PDF, or only on the physical print. That one check usually tells you where to look next.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Find where a plotting problem starts before changing random settings.
Where to go: Use the same drawing through four checkpoints: CAD view > Plot Preview > PDF > physical print.
Beginner rule: Change one thing at a time. After each important change, use Preview or create one test PDF/print before continuing.
Step by step — follow this in order
Step 1 — Describe exactly what is wrong
Where: Look at the output.
Do this: Use a simple symptom: too small, clipped, wrong color, missing text, rotated, slow, crash. Avoid changing settings yet.
Check: You should have one clear symptom to test.
Step 2 — Check the drawing and Layout
Where: Open the DWG and the target Layout.
Do this: Confirm the geometry, title block and viewport look correct on screen.
Check: If it is already wrong here, fix the drawing/Layout before checking the printer.
Step 3 — Open Plot Preview
Where: Press Ctrl+P or Output > Plot > Preview.
Do this: Look for the same symptom in Preview.
Check: If Preview is wrong, focus on Page Setup, paper, scale, plot area, CTB/STB and drawing content.
Step 4 — Create a PDF
Where: Plot the same sheet to the approved PDF device.
Do this: Open the PDF and look for the same symptom.
Check: If Preview is correct but PDF is wrong, focus on PDF output settings, fonts, images or batch configuration.
Step 5 — Test the physical print last
Where: Print the known-good PDF to the physical printer/plotter at Actual Size / 100% when scale matters.
Do this: Do not change the DWG while testing the printer stage.
Check: If PDF is correct but paper is wrong, focus on viewer scaling, driver, media and printable area.
Step 6 — Compare with a known-good DWG
Where: Use another drawing that normally plots correctly with the same Page Setup/device.
Do this: Run the same test.
Check: If both drawings fail, suspect the shared environment. If only one fails, stay focused on that DWG.
A simple example
Preview already wrong
If Plot Preview shows the border clipped and the scale wrong, the physical printer is not the first suspect. Check the effective Page Setup, paper, plot area and scale while the problem is still visible inside the CAD output stage.
PDF correct, paper wrong
If the PDF page dimensions, linework and measured scale are correct, preserve that file as evidence. Repeat the physical problem using the same PDF while changing only viewer, driver, media or device settings until the later-stage cause in the print process is isolated.
How the plotting chain is divided
Stage 1 — the drawing
Determine whether the drawing itself looks correct in Model/Layout.
Stage 2 — Plot Preview
If Preview is wrong, focus on Page Setup, scale, plot area, plot style and content and settings inside CAD.
Stage 3 — the PDF
If Preview is correct but PDF is wrong, focus on PDF device/settings, fonts, images, raster/vector behavior and batch configuration.
Stage 4 — the paper print
If PDF is correct but paper is wrong, focus on PDF viewer, driver, media, printable area and hardware.
One drawing or the whole system?
Compare one failing DWG with one known-good DWG using the same Page Setup to separate drawing-specific from environment-wide faults.
How to isolate the stage that is actually failing
Why random troubleshooting wastes time
Changing the driver, CTB, paper and scale simultaneously can accidentally “fix” one sheet without identifying the cause. A staged diagnostic keeps evidence intact and makes the solution repeatable.
Preview is a diagnostic boundary
Plot Preview is not infallible, but it is one of the strongest early separators. If Preview already shows clipping or wrong scale, replacing the physical printer rarely addresses the primary cause.
Known-good comparison
Keep a tiny reference DWG with standard text, dimensions, hatches, images, colors and lineweights. Plotting it through the same Page Setup can quickly show whether the environment or the project drawing is at fault.

For difficult or recurring problems
Keep one small known-good DWG and one known-good PDF as test files. They help separate drawing problems from workstation, driver and device problems. Record the root cause of recurring failures so the office does not solve the same problem repeatedly.
