Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Choose the correct sheet size and avoid borders being clipped by the printer or plotter margins.
Where to go: AutoCAD Layout > Output > Plot > Page Setup Manager > Modify > Printer/Plotter + Paper Size.
Beginner rule: Change one thing at a time. After each important change, use Preview or create one test PDF/print before continuing.
Step by step — follow this in order
Step 1 — Identify the nominal sheet size
Where: Look at the title block or project requirement.
Do this: Confirm the required standard size, for example A1 594 × 841 mm or ARCH D.
Check: You should know the exact nominal sheet before choosing a printer setting.
Step 2 — Choose the real output device first
Where: Page Setup > Printer/Plotter > Name.
Do this: Select the PDF device or physical plotter you will actually use. Paper lists depend on the selected device.
Check: The Paper Size list may change when the device changes.
Step 3 — Choose the matching paper size
Where: Page Setup > Paper Size.
Do this: Pick the exact supported size. Do not choose a similar size just because it fits.
Check: The preview page should have the correct proportions.
Step 4 — Use Plot Area = Layout for prepared sheets
Where: Page Setup > Plot Area.
Do this: For a prepared Layout, choose Layout. Keep the sheet at 1:1.
Check: The title block should sit relative to the real paper sheet.
Step 5 — Check the printable area
Where: Click Preview.
Do this: Look for clipped borders or unexpected offsets. Remember that a physical device may have unprintable margins even when the nominal paper size is correct.
Check: A border too close to the edge is a device/margin problem, not necessarily a drawing-scale problem.
Step 6 — For a physical plotter, verify the driver/media
Where: Outside AutoCAD, open the plotter driver or printer properties.
Do this: Confirm the loaded roll/sheet width, orientation and any borderless/oversize setting supported by that exact model.
Check: AutoCAD and the driver should agree on paper size and orientation.
A simple example
A1 border clips on one plotter
The title block may fit inside an A1 PDF page yet cross the physical plotter’s printable boundary. Compare the nominal A1 sheet with the exact driver printable area and use a tested oversize or margin strategy instead of moving the border randomly.
Custom roll size
A long drawing may require a custom roll length. Define the media in the device/driver layer first, confirm that CAD sees the same definition, then test orientation and cutting on a short calibration job before sending the full-length plot.
The paper and margin terms that matter
Nominal paper size
ISO, ANSI and ARCH names describe physical sheet dimensions, not guaranteed edge-to-edge printable regions.
Printable area
Every driver/device can reserve nonprinting margins. The printable rectangle can change by model, media source and borderless/oversize mode.
Driver paper list
AutoCAD sees paper definitions exposed by the selected device/driver or PC3. The same “A1” label can behave differently across devices.
Roll paper
Roll workflows add width, rotation, cut behavior, oversize and sometimes borderless/minimal-margin options.
Custom paper size
A custom size must be valid in the operating-system driver/device and in CAD. Creating it in only one layer can leave it missing elsewhere.
How paper size and printable area interact
ISO A-series
A-series sizes preserve the square-root-of-two aspect ratio, allowing drawings to scale between adjacent sizes predictably. For plotting, the important distinction is still nominal paper versus the device’s actual printable rectangle.
ANSI and ARCH
North American technical offices often use ANSI and ARCH sheet families. Do not rely only on the letter name: “D size” can be interpreted differently in casual conversation, so store explicit dimensions in standards documentation.
Oversize strategy
Oversize formats intentionally add margin around a nominal document so the entire nominal sheet can fall inside the printable area. Manufacturer implementations differ, so verify the exact driver behavior rather than treating “oversize” as universal.
Reference-site rule
CADPlotting will list standard dimensions, but model-specific printable-area claims belong on the relevant hardware page with the exact manufacturer documentation and model context.
