AutoCAD Printable Area and Plot Margins Explained
Paper size is the full physical sheet; printable area is the smaller region the selected device can actually mark. AutoCAD shows the effective printable boundary in the Layout, and it changes with the printer/PC3 and paper size.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Understand why content can fit the paper but still be clipped by printer margins.
Where to start: Open a Layout and select the same device/paper used for real output.
Beginner rule: The white sheet edge is not always printable. Keep critical borders and notes inside the device’s printable area.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Open Page Setup
Where: PAGESETUP > Modify.
Do this: Select real device and paper.
Check: Device-specific media is active.
Step 2 — Return to Layout
Where: Layout tab.
Do this: Look for dashed printable boundary.
Check: Nonprintable margin is visible.
Step 3 — Inspect Plot partial preview
Where: Ctrl+P / Plot dialog.
Do this: Review paper size and printable area.
Check: They match the Layout.
Step 4 — Check border placement
Where: Paper Space.
Do this: Keep critical content inside dashed line.
Check: Device can print it.
Step 5 — Compare another device
Where: Page Setup > Printer/Plotter.
Do this: Select another approved device for diagnosis.
Check: Printable area can change.
Step 6 — Preview and test
Where: Plot Preview > PDF/physical plot.
Do this: Check full border.
Check: No edge is lost.
Beginner example
An A1 sheet is 594 × 841 mm, but a physical plotter may not print to the exact edge. A title block at the paper edge can be clipped even though the nominal paper size is correct.
