How to Choose Paper Size in AutoCAD

The paper list depends on the selected output device. Choose the device first, then the exact paper, and remember that printable area can be smaller than the nominal sheet.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Choose the correct paper definition before arranging margins or scale.

Where to start: Project/office standard.

Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Know the required sheet

Where: Project/office standard.

Do this: Identify A3/A1/ANSI/ARCH or other actual deliverable size before AutoCAD.

Check: The nominal paper is known.

Step 2 — Open Page Setup

Where: Output > Page Setup Manager > Modify.

Do this: Open the target Layout setup.

Check: Device and Paper Size fields are visible.

Step 3 — Choose the device first

Where: Printer/Plotter > Name.

Do this: Select the real PDF/printer/PC3.

Check: The Paper Size list refreshes.

Step 4 — Choose the exact paper

Where: Paper Size.

Do this: Select the correct standard/custom entry supported by that device.

Check: The page proportions are correct.

Step 5 — Check orientation and printable area

Where: Drawing Orientation and Layout dashed printable boundary/Preview.

Do this: Make sure required border stays inside the usable area.

Check: Nothing important lies outside printable area.

Step 6 — Save the setup

Where: OK > named Page Setup/Set Current.

Do this: Use a clear name such as A1 PDF.

Check: The paper definition is repeatable.

Beginner example

You need A1 but only A3 and A4 appear in the list. Check the selected printer or PC3 first. Paper sizes belong to the selected output device, so changing to the correct large-format device may make A1 available.

AutoCAD displays paper sizes supported by the selected printer, plotter or PC3. If you change the device, the paper list can change too.

Nominal paper and printable area are different

Name standards clearly

For repeated work, save a Create a Named Page Setup whose name tells users the paper and destination, such as A1 PDF MONO.

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Why does the Paper Size list change when I choose another printer?

Paper choices come from the selected printer, plotter or PC3 configuration. Different devices can expose different standard and custom sizes.

Should I create a PC3 for every printer?

Not necessarily. A system printer can often be used directly. A PC3 is useful when you need AutoCAD-specific, repeatable device settings.

Why should I test the printer outside AutoCAD?

It separates operating-system or hardware problems from AutoCAD configuration problems. If the device cannot print normally outside AutoCAD, fix that layer first.
