Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Organize many existing Layouts into a sheet set and publish them without manually opening and plotting every DWG.

Where to go: AutoCAD > View tab > Palettes panel > Sheet Set Manager (location can vary by workspace); publishing uses the sheet set palette.

Beginner rule: Change one thing at a time. After each important change, use Preview or create one test PDF/print before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in order

Step 1 — Make sure the Layouts already plot correctly

Where: Open a few source DWGs and their Layouts.

Do this: Confirm each source Layout has the right title block, viewport and Page Setup before creating the sheet set.

Check: A sheet set should organize correct sheets, not fix bad ones.

Step 2 — Open Sheet Set Manager

Where: View > Palettes > Sheet Set Manager.

Do this: Create a new sheet set or open an existing .dst.

Check: The Sheet Set Manager palette should appear.

Step 3 — Add Layouts as sheets

Where: In Sheet Set Manager, add/import the required Layouts.

Do this: Organize them into subsets such as discipline, area or phase.

Check: Each sheet entry should point to a real Layout.

Step 4 — Check Page Setup Overrides before publishing

Where: Sheet set properties / Publish settings.

Do this: If an override is used, identify the source drawing/template and named Page Setup.

Check: You should know whether publishing is using the Layout setup or substituting an override.

Step 5 — Publish a small subset

Where: Select two or three sheets > Publish to PDF or the required device.

Do this: Check paper, CTB/STB, order and filename.

Check: The subset should match direct plotting from the Layouts.

Step 6 — Publish the full set

Where: Select the complete set > Publish.

Do this: Only proceed after the subset test passes.

Check: The final issue set should have correct order, names and plotting standards.

One project, many DWGs

Imagine twenty drawing files, each with one or more layouts. Sheet Set Manager can collect those layouts as sheets, keep them in the desired order and publish a selected subset or the full set without opening and plotting every drawing manually.

Override source drawing

Autodesk documents that Page Setup Overrides are stored in a designated drawing template/source. Treat that file as production infrastructure; do not let users casually overwrite it.

When overrides help

Overrides are excellent when project layouts contain mixed local settings but the drawing set must be forced to a controlled PDF or plotter configuration.

When overrides confuse

If users do not know an override is active, they can troubleshoot the layout itself for hours while the publish process is actually substituting another setup. The effective setup must be visible in diagnostics.

Civil 3D connection

Civil 3D plan production often feeds Sheet Set Manager. The generic publishing mechanics stay here; civil-specific plan/profile generation stays in the Civil 3D hub.
