AutoCAD Page Setup Overrides Explained
A Page Setup Override lets Sheet Set Manager publish selected sheets with a controlled output recipe—such as a PDF setup—without requiring you to rebuild every Layout's normal working Page Setup.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: See exactly where a Sheet Set Page Setup Override comes from and how it is used during publishing.
Where to start: Open the project’s Sheet Set Manager and one representative sheet.
Beginner rule: Think of the override as a publishing recipe. It does not repair viewport scales, title blocks or other drawing content.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Open Sheet Set Manager
Where: View > Palettes > Sheet Set Manager.
Do this: Open the correct project sheet set (DST).
Check: The Sheet List for the project is visible.
Step 2 — Open Sheet Set Properties
Where: Sheet Set Manager > right-click the Sheet Set name > Properties.
Do this: Find the Page Setup Overrides File setting.
Check: You can see which DWT/DWG supplies override Page Setups.
Step 3 — Check the override source file
Where: Page Setup Overrides File > browse/open the controlled source as needed.
Do this: Confirm the source contains the named Page Setups used for publishing.
Check: The override list comes from a known standards file.
Step 4 — Inspect one normal sheet setup
Where: Open one sheet Layout > PAGESETUP.
Do this: Note the Layout’s normal Page Setup before publishing.
Check: You can distinguish the sheet’s working setup from the publishing override.
Step 5 — Choose an override for a small publish
Where: Sheet Set Manager > select 1–3 sheets > Publish > Publish Using Page Setup Override.
Do this: Choose the named PDF/plotter override.
Check: The selected sheets will use the override for this publish operation.
Step 6 — Review the test output
Where: Open the PDF or inspect the plot.
Do this: Check paper, CTB/STB, scale and destination.
Check: The override recipe behaves correctly.
Step 7 — Reopen the sheet
Where: Open the same Layout after the test.
Do this: Confirm the sheet’s normal Page Setup/content was not ‘fixed’ by changing unrelated drawing controls.
Check: You understand the separation between working setup and publishing override.
Beginner example
A sheet may normally point to a physical plotter, while the submission package is published with an A1-PDF-MONO Page Setup Override. The override provides the batch PDF recipe without forcing you to edit every sheet’s normal plotter setup first.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
The overrides file is a standards source
Autodesk describes a separate DWT file that can contain Page Setups used to override the Page Setups in sheets during publishing.
The override is selected when publishing
Sheet Set Manager can publish using the sheet Page Setups or a named Page Setup Override, depending on the workflow.
Shared overrides create shared symptoms
If every sheet suddenly uses the same wrong CTB, printer or paper, investigate the shared override before editing dozens of Layouts.

Common problems and what to check first
| What you see | What may be causing it | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| Override choices are missing | Page Setup Overrides File is not configured or has no usable named setups | Check Sheet Set Properties and the source DWT/DWG. |
| Every sheet uses the wrong CTB | Selected override references the wrong plot-style table | Modify the named override in the controlled source. |
| Only one sheet is wrong | The problem is likely in that sheet/Layout | Open and test it outside the batch. |
| Override works on one PC only | PC3/CTB/STB/device dependencies differ | Compare standards deployment between workstations. |
When you need a more repeatable workflow
Keep the Page Setup Overrides File in a stable controlled location, use clear names such as A1-PDF-MONO, and test one representative subset whenever the override or device environment changes.

Frequently asked questions
Does an override permanently rewrite the Layout’s normal Page Setup?
It is used as the publishing output recipe; keep the normal Layout setup and publishing override conceptually separate.
Can one Sheet Set contain different paper sizes?
Yes, but use paper-appropriate Page Setups/overrides or separate publish groups.
Does an override fix a wrong viewport scale?
No. Viewport scale is drawing content and must be corrected separately.
