AutoCAD Printing & Plotting Guide

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Create a correctly sized PDF from an AutoCAD Layout without guessing through the Plot dialog.

Where to go: Start from a Layout tab at the bottom of AutoCAD. The main setup is under Output > Plot > Page Setup Manager.

Beginner rule: Change one thing at a time. After each important change, use Preview or create one test PDF/print before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in order

Step 1 — Open the sheet you want to print

Where: Bottom of the AutoCAD window > click the Layout tab you want to print, such as Layout1.

Do this: Make sure you are looking at the paper sheet, not the Model tab. If you only have Layout1/Layout2, use one of them for this first test.

Check: You should see a white paper sheet with one or more viewports showing the model.

Step 2 — Open Page Setup Manager

Where: Ribbon > Output tab > Plot panel > Page Setup Manager. You can also type PAGESETUP and press Enter.

Do this: Select the page setup used by this Layout, then click Modify. If none exists, click New and give it a simple name such as A1 PDF.

Check: The Page Setup dialog should open with Printer/Plotter, Paper Size, Plot Area and Plot Scale settings.

Step 3 — Choose the PDF device and paper size

Where: Page Setup dialog > Printer/Plotter > Name; then Paper Size.

Do this: For a first test, choose AutoCAD PDF (General Documentation).pc3, then choose the real sheet size you need, such as A1 or ARCH D.

Check: The preview image in the dialog should show the correct page orientation and paper proportions.

Step 4 — Tell AutoCAD to print the Layout at 1:1

Where: Page Setup dialog > Plot Area and Plot Scale.

Do this: Set What to Plot / Plot Area to Layout. Keep the Layout output at 1:1. Do not use Fit to Paper for a scale-critical Layout.

Check: The paper itself is now 1:1; the drawing scale will be controlled by the viewport.

Step 5 — Set and lock the viewport scale

Where: Back in the Layout, click the viewport border. Use the Viewport Scale control on the status bar, or the Properties palette.

Do this: Choose the required scale, for example 1:50 or 1:100. Then right-click the viewport border > Display Locked > Yes.

Check: Zooming around the sheet should no longer accidentally change the viewport scale.

Step 6 — Choose the plot style

Where: Output > Page Setup Manager > Modify > Plot Style Table.

Do this: Choose the office CTB/STB if one is required. For black-and-white output, use the approved monochrome style rather than changing object colors.

Check: Plot Preview should now show the intended colors and lineweight hierarchy.

Step 7 — Preview before creating the PDF

Where: Press Ctrl+P or use Output > Plot, then click Preview.

Do this: Check the border, orientation, viewport scale, text, hatches and lineweights. If the preview is wrong, fix it before creating the PDF.

Check: Only continue when the preview looks correct.

Step 8 — Create and verify the PDF

Where: Close Preview, click OK/Plot, choose the PDF filename and save it.

Do this: Open the PDF. Confirm the page size and, if scale matters, measure a known distance. When printing the PDF to paper, use Actual Size / 100%.

Check: The PDF should match the Layout and a known dimension should measure correctly.

A simple example

A repeatable A1 sheet

A typical production sheet might use an A1 Layout, a locked 1:100 viewport, a named A1 PDF Page Setup and the office CTB. Once that combination is verified, the same sheet should plot predictably without re-entering device, paper, scale and style settings each time.

A quick one-off print

A fabrication detail or temporary markup can still be printed from Model Space using Window or another controlled plot area. In that case the plot scale carries more responsibility, so verify a known dimension before treating the output as a scale-critical deliverable.

The AutoCAD plotting terms you actually need

Your drawing in Model Space

Draw real-world geometry at full size in Model Space. Do not “pre-scale” the model just to make it fit a sheet.

The sheet (Layout)

Use a Layout when the deliverable is a repeatable sheet. The layout represents paper; viewports show model geometry at controlled scales.

Page Setup

Store device, paper size, plot area, plot scale, plot style and related options in a named Page Setup instead of recreating them for every plot.

Printer, plotter or PDF device

Treat a physical printer, a PC3 configuration and a PDF device as distinct layers. A drawing can be correct while the selected device definition is not.

Checking the result

Use Plot Preview before output, then verify the resulting PDF or physical sheet. A correct preview narrows the diagnostic path dramatically.

How the AutoCAD plotting workflow fits together

Model Space versus Paper Space

Model Space plotting is legitimate for quick diagrams, details, fabrication sheets or legacy workflows, but it puts more responsibility on plot scale and plot window/extents. Layout-based production separates sheet size from model size. That separation is the foundation for consistent drawing sets, multiple scales on one sheet, title blocks and Sheet Set workflows.

Plot area choices

Layout is normally the cleanest plot area for a prepared sheet. Window is useful for controlled one-off output. Extents can be misleading when stray objects or nonprinting geometry expands the drawing extents. Display depends on the current view and is therefore less repeatable for standards-driven production.

PC3 and PMP

A PC3 stores AutoCAD plotter configuration. A PMP can contain calibrated paper/media information associated with a PC3. These files do not magically replace the operating-system driver or hardware: a PC3 that worked on another workstation can still point to a missing or differently named device.

Office standard

A professional office should define approved Page Setups by deliverable: for example A1 PDF, ARCH D PDF, A1 DesignJet, A3 laser. Store them in a controlled DWT or standards drawing and avoid user-created near-duplicates such as “A1 final”, “A1 final2” and “A1 new”.

For repeatable office standards

Once the basic sheet works, move repeated choices into named Page Setups. Keep approved PDF and physical-plotter setups in a controlled template or standards drawing. For recurring drawing sets, use PUBLISH or Sheet Set Manager instead of rebuilding the same settings sheet by sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plot different from Print in AutoCAD?

In current CAD workflows the terms are often used interchangeably. AutoCAD still uses plotting terminology because the workflow developed around technical drawings and plotters, but the same process can output to PDF, a desktop printer or a large-format plotter.

Should I print from Model Space or Paper Space?

For repeatable production sheets, Paper Space layouts are usually easier to standardize because the sheet size and viewport scale can be controlled independently. Model Space is still useful for quick or simple output.

What should I configure first when a plot is wrong?

Verify the selected device, paper size, plot area and scale before changing plot styles or drivers. Those four settings explain many plotting problems.

Why does a plot look correct in AutoCAD but wrong on paper?

The error may be later in the print process from the drawing. If Plot Preview is correct, compare the generated PDF, PDF-viewer scaling, printer driver, paper selection and physical printable area before changing the DWG.
