How to Plot a Window in AutoCAD
Window lets you draw a rectangle around exactly what you want to output, which makes it one of the easiest Model Space choices for beginners.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Select a rectangular plot area, choose scale and preview it.
Where to start: Usually Model tab.
Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Show the area you want
Where: Usually Model tab.
Do this: Zoom so the desired rectangle is easy to pick.
Check: All required geometry/notes are visible.
Step 2 — Open Plot and select paper
Where: Ctrl+P > device and Paper Size.
Do this: Choose the real destination/paper first.
Check: The page is correct.
Step 3 — Choose Window
Where: Plot Area > Window > Window button.
Do this: AutoCAD returns to the drawing.
Check: You are ready to pick two corners.
Step 4 — Pick two opposite corners
Where: Click the first corner and then the opposite corner around the required region.
Do this: Leave enough room for notes/border.
Check: The Window is stored.
Step 5 — Set scale and position
Where: Plot Scale and Plot Offset/Center.
Do this: Use fixed scale when measurements matter; Fit only for a check print.
Check: Output size and position are intentional.
Step 6 — Preview
Where: Click Preview.
Do this: Confirm nothing important is cut off.
Check: Exactly the intended rectangle is shown.
Beginner example
You need to print only one machine detail from a much larger Model Space drawing. Choose Window, click two opposite corners around that detail, then preview to confirm that nothing outside the selected rectangle is being plotted.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
Window means a rectangle on the drawing
After choosing Window, AutoCAD asks for two opposite corners. Everything inside that rectangle becomes the candidate plot area.
Area first, scale second
Define the correct Window before using Plot Scale or Center a Plot. A scale setting cannot repair a badly selected region.
Window is useful but not a sheet standard
For repeated issued sheets, build a Layout and named Page Setup for Beginners instead of picking the same rectangle manually each time.

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Frequently asked questions
Which Plot Area option is easiest for a beginner?
For a prepared Paper Space sheet, use Layout. For a quick rectangular region in Model Space, Window is usually the easiest to understand and verify.
Why does Extents sometimes make my drawing tiny?
Extents includes all geometry in the current space. A stray object far from the real drawing can enlarge the extents and make the main drawing appear very small.
Is Display repeatable?
Not very. Display depends on the current pan and zoom. Use a saved View or Layout when you need the same output region again.
