How to Print AutoCAD to a Physical Printer or Plotter

Physical output adds the operating-system driver, queue, loaded media and hardware printable area after the CAD setup. Test the device outside AutoCAD first.

Your goal: Send one verified sheet to paper without mixing hardware and CAD problems.

Where to start: Windows/office printer utility.

Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Test the printer outside AutoCAD

Where: Windows/office printer utility.

Do this: Confirm device online and correct paper/roll loaded.

Check: The hardware path works.

Step 2 — Open the target Layout

Where: Bottom tabs > sheet.

Do this: Use a known-good Page Setup when possible.

Check: The intended sheet is active.

Step 3 — Choose the physical device

Where: Ctrl+P > Printer/Plotter.

Do this: Select approved system printer or PC3.

Check: Required paper list appears.

Step 4 — Match paper/media

Where: Paper Size.

Do this: Choose the sheet that matches loaded media.

Check: No obvious mismatch exists.

Step 5 — Check CAD settings

Where: Plot Area/Scale/Orientation/CTB-STB.

Do this: For Layout use 1:1 sheet output and verify viewport scale.

Check: CAD setup is correct.

Step 6 — Preview

Where: Preview.

Do this: Check border/margins/lineweights.

Check: CAD-side output is good.

Step 7 — Send one test sheet

Where: Plot one only.

Do this: Do not send the entire project yet.

Check: Physical output is produced.

Step 8 — Compare to PDF/reference

Where: Measure scale and inspect margins.

Do this: If PDF is correct but paper is wrong, change driver/media/device—not the DWG randomly.

Check: The failing stage stays isolated.

Your PDF is correct and now you need one A1 paper test on the office plotter. Confirm the physical device, loaded roll/media, A1 paper definition and orientation, then print one representative sheet before sending the whole set.

A correct DWG and Preview can still print incorrectly if the printer driver, loaded media, printable area or plotter settings differ from the CAD setup.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Should I create a PDF before physical printing?

For many workflows, yes. A verified PDF is a useful digital checkpoint and makes reprints easier. Direct plotting can also be valid when the device workflow is standardized.

Why does a correct PDF print at the wrong scale?

The PDF viewer or printer driver may apply Fit, Shrink or another scaling step. Use Actual Size/100% when scale must be preserved.

How many sheets should I test before a batch?

At least one representative sheet, and more when paper sizes or devices differ. Approve the output path before sending the full set.
