AutoCAD Fit to Paper Explained

Fit to Paper is useful for a quick check print, but it automatically changes scale. Do not use it when somebody must measure the printed drawing at 1:50, 1:100 or another exact scale.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Use Fit only when exact printed scale is not required.

Where to start: Ctrl+P.

Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Open Plot with device, paper and area already correct

Where: Ctrl+P.

Do this: Do not begin with Fit; first choose the right destination and region.

Check: You know what is being fitted.

Step 2 — Find Plot Scale

Where: Plot dialog > Plot Scale.

Do this: Locate Fit to Paper/Fit.

Check: You can see whether automatic scaling is active.

Step 3 — Try Fit for a check print

Where: Enable Fit to Paper.

Do this: Use only where exact measurement is not required.

Check: Preview fills the available page.

Step 4 — Turn Fit off for scale-critical output

Where: Clear Fit.

Do this: Choose a fixed scale or use a Layout at 1:1 with a controlled viewport.

Check: Scale is deliberate.

Step 5 — Check the PDF viewer too

Where: After PDF creation > Print > Actual Size/100%.

Do this: Do not apply a second Fit/Shrink operation downstream.

Check: A known paper measurement remains correct.

Beginner example

You only need a quick review copy and exact scale does not matter. Fit to Paper can enlarge or reduce the selected area to fit the sheet. Do not use it when someone must measure the printed drawing at 1:50, 1:100 or another fixed scale.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

Fit changes the scale automatically

Fit to Paper enlarges or reduces the chosen plot area to fit inside the selected paper. That means the printed drawing is no longer at a known engineering or architectural scale unless separately verified.

Use Fit for check prints

Fit is excellent when the goal is simply to see all geometry on the page for review, markups or orientation checks.

Use fixed scale for measurable drawings

For a drawing that must print at 1:50 or 1:100, use a controlled Plot Scale or a Layout with a fixed Viewport Scale. Also print the PDF at Actual Size/100%.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Fit to Paper for a 1:100 drawing?

Not when the printed drawing must remain measurable at 1:100. Fit chooses an automatic scale. Use a fixed plotting workflow and verify the output at 100%.

Does Center the Plot change scale?

No. Center changes the position of the selected plot area within the printable page. Scale is a separate setting.

Should I rotate the drawing to fix Landscape printing?

Normally no. Choose the correct paper and Drawing Orientation first. Rotate model geometry only when the design itself needs rotation, not as a print workaround.

Why is a centered plot still clipped?

The device printable area may be smaller than the nominal sheet, or the wrong paper definition may be selected. Check those before changing the center or scale.
