AutoCAD Print vs Plot: What Is the Difference?

AutoCAD still says Plot, but for normal CAD output print and plot are essentially the same process. The destination can be PDF, a desktop printer or a large-format plotter.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Know which command to use without getting stuck on the words print versus plot.

Where to start: Press Ctrl+P or Ribbon > Output > Plot.

Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Open the normal AutoCAD output command

Where: Press Ctrl+P or Ribbon > Output > Plot.

Do this: Notice that AutoCAD calls the dialog Plot even if your destination is a PDF or office printer.

Step 2 — Look at the Printer/Plotter list

Do this: Use the simplest output tool that matches the deliverable.

Check: You are no longer treating print and plot as separate systems.

PLOT is normally for one sheet

For a single current sheet, use the Plot dialog described in Plot Dialog Explained. For a large repeated set, move toward Publish or Sheet Set Manager rather than opening every Layout one at a time.

The destination changes, the logic does not

Whether you create a Plot to PDF or use a Print to a Physical Plotter, you still need the correct paper, plot area, scale, style and orientation.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Is “Print” the wrong word in AutoCAD?
