How to Print in AutoCAD: A Complete Beginner Guide
Your first AutoCAD print is easier if you ignore most advanced options and make one correct PDF from one Layout first.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Create one correct Layout PDF, understand what you changed, then reuse the same logic for paper.
Where to start: Bottom of the AutoCAD window > click Layout1 or your real sheet Layout.
Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Open the Layout you want to print
Where: Bottom of the AutoCAD window > click Layout1 or your real sheet Layout.
Do this: Use a Layout for this first exercise. Do not start by changing Model Space geometry.
Check: A white paper sheet and at least one viewport are visible.
Step 2 — Open Page Setup Manager
Where: Ribbon > Output tab > Plot panel > Page Setup Manager, or type PAGESETUP.
Do this: Select the current setup and click Modify. If none exists, create a simple named setup such as A1 PDF.
Check: The Page Setup dialog opens.
Step 3 — Choose the output device and real paper
Where: Printer/Plotter > Name, then Paper Size.
Do this: For the first test choose an AutoCAD PDF PC3 and the real sheet size such as A3, A1 or ARCH D.
Check: The preview icon shows the expected page proportions.
Step 4 — Use Layout and 1:1 for the paper sheet
Where: Page Setup > Plot Area and Plot Scale.
Do this: Set Plot Area to Layout and keep the Layout output at 1:1.
Check: The paper itself is being output at real size.
Step 5 — Set and lock the viewport scale
Where: Back on the Layout > click viewport border > status-bar Viewport Scale or Properties.
Do this: Choose the required scale such as 1:50 or 1:100, then set Display Locked = Yes.
Check: The model is framed at a known scale and cannot be changed by accidental zooming.
Step 6 — Preview before creating anything
Where: Press Ctrl+P > Preview.
Do this: Check border, orientation, text, hatches and lineweights. Close Preview if something is wrong.
Check: The preview looks like the sheet you expect to deliver.
Step 7 — Create and verify the PDF
Where: Return from Preview > OK/Plot > choose a filename.
Do this: Open the PDF, confirm page size, and measure one known distance when scale matters. Print at Actual Size/100%.
Check: The PDF and measured scale match the Layout.
Beginner example
You need to issue an A1 floor plan at 1:100. Keep the model full size, open the A1 Layout, set the viewport to 1:100, choose the A1 PDF Page Setup, preview the sheet, then create one PDF and measure a known distance before printing.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
Model Space is the drawing, not the paper
Most CAD geometry should stay at real size in Model Space. The paper sheet is a different job. If you need a repeatable deliverable, move to a Layout and use a Viewport Scale rather than shrinking the model.
A Page Setup saves the output choices
A Page Setup for Beginners groups the printer or PDF device, paper, plot area, plot scale, plot style and orientation. That is why a named setup is much safer than remembering the same choices every time.
Preview is your first checkpoint
If Plot Preview is already wrong, stay inside AutoCAD and fix the sheet setup. If Preview is correct but the physical sheet is wrong, use the Plotting Troubleshooting workflow and investigate the later PDF, driver or hardware stage.

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.
