How to Create a Viewport for Printing in AutoCAD
A viewport is a window on a Layout that looks into Model Space. It is how a 1:1 paper sheet can show a full-size building at 1:100.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Create, scale, position and lock one viewport.
Where to start: Bottom tabs > select the Layout with correct paper/title block.
Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Open a prepared Layout
Where: Bottom tabs > select the Layout with correct paper/title block.
Do this: Stay in Paper Space.
Check: You see the sheet.
Step 2 — Create a rectangular viewport
Where: Ribbon > Layout tab > Layout Viewports > Rectangular, or type MVIEW.
Do this: Pick two corners inside the title block.
Check: The model appears in a bordered window.
Step 3 — Activate the viewport
Where: Double-click inside it.
Do this: Pan to the model area you want to show.
Check: The viewport interior is active.
Step 4 — Set the viewport scale
Where: Status bar Viewport Scale or select border > Properties > Standard Scale.
Do this: Choose 1:50, 1:100 or the required standard scale.
Check: The model resizes in the viewport without changing Model Space geometry.
Step 5 — Position the view
Where: With the viewport active, pan only.
Do this: Frame the intended drawing while preserving the scale.
Check: The view is composed correctly.
Step 6 — Lock the viewport
Where: Double-click outside > select border > Properties > Display Locked = Yes.
Do this: Lock after scale and view are approved.
Check: Accidental zooming no longer changes scale.
Step 7 — Preview the sheet
Where: Ctrl+P > Preview.
Do this: Check framing, scale and clipping.
Check: The viewport prints as intended.
Beginner example
Your A1 Layout is ready but the model is not visible on the sheet. Create a viewport inside the title-block area, activate it, frame the model, choose 1:100, then lock the viewport so an accidental zoom cannot change the scale.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
A viewport is a window, not a copy
The model remains in Model Space. The viewport only shows it through a rectangular or shaped opening on the Layout.
Set scale after activating the viewport
Activate the viewport, frame the required area and choose the intended Viewport Scale. Then pan to position the view without zooming away from that scale.
Lock it when approved
After the view and scale are correct, lock the viewport. This prevents an accidental mouse-wheel zoom from changing a 1:100 sheet into an unknown scale.

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Why should I Preview before plotting?
Preview shows how AutoCAD intends to place and render the sheet. If it is already wrong there, you can fix the CAD-side settings before wasting paper or creating a bad final PDF.
