How to Print from Paper Space (Layout) in AutoCAD

A Layout is the easiest beginner workflow for a repeatable sheet: the paper stays at 1:1 while a viewport shows the full-size model at the required drawing scale.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Print a prepared Layout at 1:1 while the viewport controls the drawing scale.

Where to start: Bottom tabs > select the sheet Layout.

Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Open the correct Layout

Where: Bottom tabs > select the sheet Layout.

Do this: Confirm title block and sheet number before plotting.

Check: The whole paper sheet is visible.

Step 2 — Open Page Setup Manager

Where: Output > Plot > Page Setup Manager > Modify.

Do this: Use the setup for this Layout.

Check: Device, paper, area and scale controls are visible.

Step 3 — Choose device and paper

Where: Printer/Plotter and Paper Size.

Do this: Select the approved device/PDF and exact sheet.

Check: Paper matches the title block.

Step 4 — Set Plot Area to Layout

Where: Page Setup > Plot Area.

Do this: Choose Layout.

Check: AutoCAD uses the prepared paper sheet instead of a changing screen/window.

Step 5 — Keep the Layout at 1:1

Where: Page Setup > Plot Scale.

Do this: Use 1:1 for the paper sheet.

Check: The viewport, not the sheet, carries 1:50/1:100/etc.

Step 6 — Check and lock the viewport

Where: Layout > select viewport border > scale control/Properties.

Do this: Set required scale and Display Locked = Yes.

Check: The approved view cannot be accidentally zoomed.

Step 7 — Preview and output

Where: Ctrl+P > Preview > Plot.

Do this: Check border, orientation and lineweights before creating PDF/paper.

Check: The output matches the Layout.

Beginner example

You have an A1 Layout with a title block and a 1:100 viewport. Plot Area should be Layout and the paper output should normally stay at 1:1. Preview the entire sheet before creating the PDF.

The viewport carries the drawing scale

Keep the prepared Layout at 1:1. Set the model view to 1:50, 1:100 or another required value with Viewport Scale and lock the viewport after framing.

A Layout is easier to repeat

Once the sheet, viewport and Page Setup are correct, Reprint the Same Sheet becomes much safer because you are reusing saved settings instead of rebuilding them.

Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.
