How to Create an AutoCAD Layout for Printing
Think of a Layout as the real paper sheet inside the DWG. Set the paper first, then place the title block and viewport on that sheet.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Create a clean Layout with the correct paper, orientation and first viewport.
Where to start: Bottom of AutoCAD > click + near Layout tabs, or use Layout1.
Beginner rule: Follow the steps in order. Do not change several plotting settings at once. After an important change, use Preview or make one test output before continuing.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Create or open a Layout tab
Where: Bottom of AutoCAD > click + near Layout tabs, or use Layout1.
Do this: Create one sheet for the exercise.
Check: A Paper Space sheet appears.
Step 2 — Open Page Setup Manager
Where: Right-click Layout > Page Setup Manager, or Output > Page Setup Manager.
Do this: Click New or Modify.
Check: The Page Setup dialog opens.
Step 3 — Choose device and paper first
Where: Printer/Plotter and Paper Size.
Do this: Choose a PDF device for the first test and the real page such as A3/A1.
Check: The white paper changes to the correct proportions.
Step 4 — Set Layout and 1:1
Where: Plot Area = Layout; Plot Scale = 1:1.
Do this: Keep the paper at real size.
Check: The sheet definition is stable.
Step 5 — Set orientation
Where: Drawing Orientation.
Do this: Choose Portrait or Landscape to match the title block.
Check: The paper is oriented correctly.
Step 6 — Place the title block in Paper Space
Where: On the Layout.
Do this: Insert/draw the title block at paper size; do not randomly scale it to repair a wrong page.
Check: The title block fits the chosen sheet.
Step 7 — Create the first viewport
Where: Layout tab > Layout Viewports > Rectangular, or type MVIEW.
Do this: Draw the viewport inside the usable title-block area.
Check: Model geometry appears through the viewport.
Beginner example
You have only a full-size model and now need an A3 deliverable. Create a new Layout, assign A3 paper, place the title block on the sheet, create a viewport and set that viewport to the required drawing scale.

Choose the PDF/printer and Choose Paper Size before spending time positioning a title block. Otherwise the usable paper boundary can move later.
The title block belongs to paper space
A normal Layout title block represents the physical sheet. Keep it at paper size instead of scaling it randomly to compensate for a wrong setup.
Create viewports after the sheet is stable
Once the Layout is correct, create a Create a Viewport inside the title block and set the model view to the required scale.

When you need a more repeatable workflow
Once this basic method works, stop rebuilding the same settings by hand. Save the proven choices in a named Page Setup for Beginners, use a prepared Layout when the sheet is recurring, lock any production viewport, and keep one verified PDF or physical plot as a reference. For larger drawing sets, move toward Sheet Set Manager or publishing rather than repeating a manual Plot operation on every sheet.

Do I need to understand every Plot option before I can print?
No. Start with one Layout, choose the real device and paper, use Layout at 1:1, set the viewport scale, Preview and create one PDF. Learn the remaining options as you need them.
Why should I Preview before plotting?
Preview shows how AutoCAD intends to place and render the sheet. If it is already wrong there, you can fix the CAD-side settings before wasting paper or creating a bad final PDF.
Should I use Model Space or a Layout?
Use a Layout for repeatable sheets with title blocks and controlled viewports. Model Space remains useful for quick one-off regions when you deliberately set plot area and scale.
