Layout Looks Correct but Generated PDF Is Wrong

The AutoCAD Layout looks right, but the generated PDF has a different scale, crop, font, color, transparency or orientation. Start by identifying exactly where the problem first appears, then test the most likely causes one at a time. This avoids changing a correct drawing to compensate for a PDF, driver or printer problem.

Symptoms — confirm exactly what is wrong

  • The AutoCAD Layout looks right, but the generated PDF has a different scale, crop, font, color, transparency or orientation.
  • A correct Preview is strong evidence that the drawing and Page Setup are basically correct.
  • Compare the saved PDF before involving the physical printer; this separates PDF creation from printer/viewer behavior.

Beginner rule: Change one setting at a time. After each change, repeat the same test so you know what actually fixed the problem.

30-second triage: Treat Preview → saved PDF → physical paper as three separate stages. The first stage that becomes wrong is the stage you should troubleshoot.

Likely causes — check these in order

Likely causeWhy it creates this symptomQuick check
PDF PC3/preset differsA different PDF preset can change quality, fonts, layers and other output behavior.Compare the current PDF PC3 with the known-good project preset.
Plot scale is not the intended valueA second scale is being applied in Plot/Page Setup.Open PAGESETUP > Modify and read Plot Scale.
Wrong paper sizeA near-size sheet can force resizing or clipping.Compare the exact paper dimensions with the title block.
PDF font handling differsCapture Fonts or Convert Text to Geometry can change how text is represented in the PDF.Open PDF Options and inspect Font Handling.
Preview and final output use different downstream conditionsPlot Preview can be correct while the saved PDF or physical printer changes page/media/rendering behavior.Compare Preview, saved PDF and paper as three separate stages.

Diagnostic path — isolate the responsible setting

Work through the checks in order. Do not apply a fix until its diagnostic check differs from the known-good project standard.

Diagnostic 1 — PDF PC3/preset differs

Where: PAGESETUP > Modify.

Do this: Compare the current PDF PC3 with the known-good project preset.

Check: If this differs from the known-good project standard, correct it and retest before continuing.

Diagnostic 2 — Plot scale is not the intended value

Where: PAGESETUP > Modify.

Do this: Open PAGESETUP > Modify and read Plot Scale.

Check: If this differs from the known-good project standard, correct it and retest before continuing.

Diagnostic 3 — Wrong paper size

Where: PAGESETUP > Modify.

Do this: Compare the exact paper dimensions with the title block.

Check: If this differs from the known-good project standard, correct it and retest before continuing.

Diagnostic 4 — PDF font handling differs

Where: PDF PC3 Properties / Export to PDF Options > Font Handling.

Do this: Open PDF Options and inspect Font Handling.

Check: If this differs from the known-good project standard, correct it and retest before continuing.

Diagnostic 5 — Preview and final output use different downstream conditions

Where: Plot Preview, then the freshly generated PDF, then the physical printer as three separate checkpoints.

Do this: Compare Preview, saved PDF and paper as three separate stages.

Check: If this also matches the known-good setup, use the isolation test below instead of changing unrelated settings.

Fixes — use only the fix that matches your diagnosis

Fix 1 — Return to the approved PDF preset

Use this fix when: your diagnosis confirmed that PDF PC3/preset differs.

Do this: Select the known-good project PDF PC3 and its PDF options. Compare the same Layout before changing drawing content.

Check: Compare Preview, the fresh PDF and paper again; stop at the first stage that becomes wrong.

Fix 2 — Remove the second plot scale

Use this fix when: your diagnosis confirmed that Plot scale is not the intended value.

Do this: For a prepared Layout, open PAGESETUP > Modify and use Plot Area = Layout with the normal 1:1 sheet output.

Check: Compare Preview, the fresh PDF and paper again; stop at the first stage that becomes wrong.

Fix 3 — Use the exact project paper

Use this fix when: your diagnosis confirmed that Wrong paper size.

Do this: Select the exact ISO/ANSI/ARCH or approved custom media that matches the title block.

Check: Compare Preview, the fresh PDF and paper again; stop at the first stage that becomes wrong.

Fix 4 — Choose the correct PDF font option

Use this fix when: your diagnosis confirmed that PDF font handling differs.

Do this: Use the office-approved Capture Fonts or Convert Text to Geometry strategy and retest a font-heavy sheet.

Check: Compare Preview, the fresh PDF and paper again; stop at the first stage that becomes wrong.

Fix 5 — Isolate the first wrong output stage

Use this fix when: your diagnosis confirmed that Preview and final output use different downstream conditions.

Do this: Create the PDF from the same Page Setup. If Preview is correct but PDF is wrong, stay in the PDF PC3/options stage; if PDF is correct but paper is wrong, stay in the viewer/printer stage.

Check: Compare Preview, the fresh PDF and paper again; stop at the first stage that becomes wrong.

Verification — prove the fix before full production

  1. Run Plot Preview and confirm the original symptom is absent there.
  2. Create a fresh PDF from exactly the same Page Setup and compare it with Preview.
  3. Print that same PDF at Actual Size / 100% on the intended media.
  4. Record which stage changed scale, margins, orientation, color or lineweight before approving the fix.

Still not fixed? Use an isolation test

Save a fresh PDF from the same Page Setup and compare it directly with Preview. Then print that exact PDF. Do not skip a stage.

Prevention — reduce the chance of recurrence

  • Keep one known-good PDF and one physical calibration sheet for important output devices.
  • Do not edit the DWG when Preview and PDF are already correct; troubleshoot the downstream stage.
  • Standardize PDF viewer printing instructions for scale-critical documents.
  • Retest device behavior after driver, firmware, roll/media or PC3 changes.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check first?

Start with PDF PC3/preset differs. Use the quick check in the diagnostic section before changing anything else.

What if that check is correct?

Move to Plot scale is not the intended value. The goal is to eliminate causes one at a time, not to change several settings together.

If Plot Preview is correct, should I edit the drawing?

Usually no. Create and inspect the PDF next; if that is also correct, focus on the PDF viewer, printer driver or physical device.
