Hardware Printable Area, Margins and Borderless CAD Plotting
Every physical plotter has a media-dependent relationship between nominal sheet size and the area it can actually mark. Borderless capability can reduce margins on supported media, but it does not replace a CAD border standard.

What the term means in a CAD plotting workflow
AutoCAD reads printable-area information from the selected plotter configuration/driver. The nominal sheet may be ARCH D, A1 or another standard size, while the device has non-printable margins or special borderless modes.
Why it matters for AutoCAD users
- A PDF driver often has a different printable area from a physical plotter.
- Roll and cut-sheet paths can have different margins.

Practical example
A title block sits 3 mm from the nominal paper edge. It may fit one PDF driver and clip on a physical plotter. Select the real device/media in PAGESETUP, inspect the printable boundary and run a physical calibration before adopting that border as the office standard.

Maintain a safe-border standard per production device/media family and a physical calibration sheet after every major driver/media change.
What this does not mean
Borderless does not automatically mean scale-critical technical plotting should use zero margins; accuracy and clipping must be tested.

Is borderless printing safe for scale-critical CAD?
Only after the exact device/media mode is physically verified. Some borderless workflows can use edge handling or enlargement behavior that is inappropriate for dimension-critical output.
Why can a PDF show the full border while paper clips it?
The physical plotter can have a smaller printable area or different margin behavior than the PDF driver.
Should I shrink the sheet to fit the hardware margin?
Not as the default fix. Use the correct physical media and a safe border standard; keep the intended Layout scale unchanged.
