How to Include AutoCAD Layer Information in a PDF

AutoCAD can include layer information in PDFs so compatible viewers can turn layers on and off. The option is controlled in PDF export or publish settings and is enabled by default in several predefined presets but not Smallest File.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Create a PDF with usable layer information and verify the layers appear in the viewer.

Where to start: Open a Layout with several clearly named layers and choose the project PDF preset.

Beginner rule: PDF layers do not replace CAD layers. They are optional data in the exported document.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Open PDF options

Where: PDF PC3 Properties / Export or Publish Options.

Do this: Find Include Layer Information.

Check: Option is visible.

Step 2 — Enable layer information

Where: Data section.

Do this: Turn it on.

Check: PDF is configured to carry layers.

Step 3 — Keep the correct Page Setup

Where: PAGESETUP.

Do this: Confirm paper, CTB/STB and scale.

Check: Only PDF data changed.

Step 4 — Create the PDF

Where: Plot/Publish.

Do this: Save a representative sheet.

Check: Output completes.

Step 5 — Open the Layers panel

Where: Compatible PDF viewer.

Do this: Inspect and toggle a noncritical layer.

Check: Layer data is usable.

Step 6 — Check deliverable policy

Where: Client/security standard.

Do this: Decide whether exposing layer structure is allowed.

Check: Data is approved.

Beginner example

Internal review PDFs can include layer information for isolation, while external issue PDFs may intentionally omit it if the deliverable policy requires a simpler document.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

Layer information is optional PDF data

It does not change plotted appearance by itself.

Preset defaults differ

Smallest File excludes layers by default.

Data policy matters

Interactive layers can expose more structure than some deliverables need.
