How to Create Bookmarks in AutoCAD PDFs

AutoCAD can create PDF bookmarks from sheets and named views when the PDF option is enabled. Bookmarks are especially useful in multi-sheet issue packages.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Create a multi-sheet PDF whose bookmarks reflect the sheet or view structure.

Where to start: Use a drawing set or Sheet Set with meaningful sheet names.

Beginner rule: Bookmarks inherit their usefulness from good sheet and view names. Fix bad names before publishing.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Review sheet names

Where: PUBLISH list or Sheet Set Manager.

Do this: Make sheet titles clear and ordered.

Check: Bookmark labels will be useful.

Step 2 — Open PDF options

Where: Publish Options or Sheet Set PDF Publish Options.

Do this: Find Create Bookmarks.

Check: Option is visible.

Step 3 — Enable bookmarks

Where: PDF Data options.

Do this: Turn it on.

Check: Package will include navigation.

Step 4 — Publish a small multi-sheet PDF

Where: PUBLISH or Sheet Set.

Do this: Create 3 to 5 pages.

Check: Output completes.

Step 5 — Open Bookmarks panel

Where: PDF viewer.

Do this: Expand the tree.

Check: Sheets or views are easy to navigate.

Step 6 — Fix naming or order upstream

Where: AutoCAD source.

Do this: Correct unclear labels and republish.

Check: PDF navigation reflects CAD source.

Beginner example

A 120-sheet issue package without bookmarks forces reviewers to scroll page by page. Good Sheet Set names plus PDF bookmarks turn the package into a navigable document.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

Bookmarks are generated from CAD organization

Good source structure improves the PDF.

They are optional data

They do not change scale or lineweights.

Multi-sheet PDFs benefit most

Separate one-sheet files need less bookmark hierarchy.
