How to Install CTB Files in AutoCAD on Windows
Install a CTB by placing the approved .ctb file in the Plot Styles folder AutoCAD is actually using, then select it in a CTB-mode drawing's Page Setup and verify a calibration sample.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Install one approved CTB on Windows and prove that AutoCAD can use it.
Where to start: Have the master .ctb file available and open AutoCAD.
Beginner rule: Do not guess an AppData path. Let AutoCAD open the active Plot Styles folder with STYLESMANAGER.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Confirm the drawing expects CTB
Where: Command line > type PSTYLEMODE.
Do this: A value of 1 indicates color-dependent plot styles for the current drawing.
Check: You are testing the CTB in the correct drawing mode.
Step 2 — Open the active Plot Styles folder
Where: Command line > type STYLESMANAGER.
Do this: Press Enter and leave the Windows folder that AutoCAD opens visible.
Check: You know the exact active plot-style location.
Step 3 — Copy the master CTB
Where: Windows File Explorer > approved standards source.
Do this: Copy the .ctb into the folder opened by STYLESMANAGER.
Check: The exact approved file is in AutoCAD’s active Plot Styles folder.
Step 4 — Reopen Page Setup
Where: Return to AutoCAD > PAGESETUP > select the Layout setup > Modify.
Do this: Open the Plot Style Table list after copying the file.
Check: The new CTB name appears.
Step 5 — Select the CTB
Where: Page Setup > Plot Style Table.
Do this: Choose the exact approved table and save the Page Setup if this is the intended standard.
Check: The Layout references the installed CTB.
Step 6 — Preview a calibration sheet
Where: Ctrl+P > Preview.
Do this: Check known ACI colors, lineweights and screening.
Check: The CTB mapping behaves as expected.
Step 7 — Verify final output
Where: Plot a PDF and, if required, one physical sample.
Do this: Compare with the known-good reference output.
Check: The installation is proven beyond simple file visibility.
Beginner example
To install Office-Mono.ctb, type STYLESMANAGER, copy Office-Mono.ctb into the folder that opens, return to PAGESETUP, select Office-Mono.ctb and Preview a calibration sheet. There is no need to hunt through Windows folders by memory.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
CTB is color-dependent
AutoCAD uses indexed drawing color to select color-dependent plot-style rows in a CTB workflow.
The CTB file is external
A DWG or Page Setup can reference a CTB by name without carrying that file to another workstation.
File visibility is not the final test
The real proof is a calibration Preview/PDF showing the expected color, lineweight and screening behavior.

Common problems and what to check first
| What you see | What may be causing it | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| CTB is not listed | The file is not in the active Plot Styles folder or the drawing is STB-mode | Check STYLESMANAGER and PSTYLEMODE. |
| Works on another PC | The CTB file/path/version differs | Compare against the controlled master. |
| Colors are correct but lineweights are wrong | The CTB mapping or object lineweights differ | Inspect the relevant ACI row and Page Setup options. |
| Single Plot is correct but batch is wrong | PUBLISH/Sheet Set uses another Page Setup Override | Check the batch configuration. |
When you need a more repeatable workflow
Keep one master CTB in a controlled standards source and deploy that exact version to the Plot Styles environment used by every CAD workstation. Test changes with the same calibration drawing.

Frequently asked questions
Does a CTB change object colors in the DWG?
No. It changes how eligible drawing colors are plotted.
Why use STYLESMANAGER?
It opens the Plot Styles folder AutoCAD is using, which avoids guessing a Windows path.
What is the safest CTB test?
A calibration sheet showing the indexed colors, lineweights and screening values your standard uses.
