AutoCAD PDF (Smallest File) Preset Explained

AutoCAD PDF (Smallest File) is one of AutoCAD's predefined PDF PC3 presets. Its default vector quality is 400 dpi and raster quality is 200 dpi; it does not include PDF layer information by default.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Understand when AutoCAD PDF (Smallest File) is appropriate and verify it on a representative CAD sheet.

Where to start: Open a finished Layout and decide how the PDF will be delivered or printed.

Beginner rule: Use preset names as starting points, then verify the actual PDF. A preset cannot decide project requirements for you.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Open Plot

Where: Layout > Ctrl+P.

Do this: Open Printer/Plotter > Name.

Check: PDF presets are visible.

Step 2 — Choose AutoCAD PDF (Smallest File)

Where: Printer/Plotter list.

Do this: Select AutoCAD PDF (Smallest File).

Check: Intended PC3 is active.

Step 3 — Confirm paper and scale

Where: Paper Size / Plot Area / Plot Scale.

Do this: Use real Layout paper and 1:1 output.

Check: Preset is not masking setup error.

Step 4 — Review PDF options

Where: Properties / PDF Options.

Do this: Read vector/raster quality and data settings.

Check: Defaults match needs.

Step 5 — Create representative PDF

Where: Preview > Plot.

Do this: Save one sheet.

Check: PDF is created.

Step 6 — Inspect behavior

Where: PDF viewer.

Do this: Check detail, file size, layers/text and printability.

Check: Preset is suitable.

Beginner example

It is intended to minimize PDF file size. Its lower quality and reduced data features are useful for quick distribution, not every issue set.

Understand what AutoCAD is doing

Default quality is a starting point

This preset uses 400 dpi vector quality and 200 dpi raster quality in Autodesk’s reference.

Layer data is part of the preset

Layer information is not included by default.

A named Page Setup should store the choice

That keeps the team from selecting a different preset every time.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

If this preset becomes an office standard, keep it inside named Page Setups and document any custom changes.
