How to Lock a Viewport in AutoCAD

Lock a viewport after its view and scale are correct. The lock prevents accidental zooming from changing the scale while you continue working on the Layout.

Your goal: Protect an approved viewport so its scale does not change by accident.

Where to start: Open the Layout and locate the viewport you want to protect.

Beginner rule: Change one scale-related setting at a time. After setting a viewport or plot scale, use Preview and verify one known measurement before trusting the final sheet.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Finish the view first

Where: Inside the Layout viewport.

Do this: Set the required scale and pan to the correct area before locking.

Check: The viewport shows the final area at the intended scale.

Step 2 — Return to Paper Space

Where: Double-click outside the viewport.

Do this: Make sure the viewport itself is no longer active for model navigation.

Check: Paper Space is active.

Step 3 — Select the viewport border

Where: Click the viewport frame once.

Do this: Select the viewport object, not geometry inside it.

Check: Viewport grips appear.

Step 4 — Turn on Display Locked

Where: Properties palette > Display Locked.

Do this: Set Display Locked to Yes.

Check: The viewport is marked as locked.

Step 5 — Test the lock

Where: Double-click inside the viewport.

Do this: Try a small mouse-wheel zoom, then undo if your configuration still permits a visual change.

Check: The production scale remains protected.

Step 6 — Preview

Where: Ctrl+P > Preview.

Do this: Confirm the view still matches the expected sheet.

Check: The locked viewport is ready for output.
