How to Center a Viewport Without Changing Its Scale

After setting a viewport scale, use PAN to move the model view into position. Do not use the mouse wheel to 'center' the view, because zooming can change the viewport scale.

Where to start: Open the Layout and confirm the viewport already has the correct scale.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Read the scale first

Where: Select viewport border > Viewport Scale.

Do this: Confirm the exact scale before moving anything.

Check: You have a before value to compare.

Step 2 — Unlock temporarily if needed

Where: Properties > Display Locked.

Do this: Set No only while you reframe the view.

Check: Viewport navigation is available.

Step 3 — Activate the viewport

Do this: Enter Model Space through that viewport.

Check: The viewport becomes active.

Step 4 — Use PAN

Where: Return to Paper Space > select viewport.

Do this: Confirm the scale is identical to the before value.

Check: Only the center changed.

Step 6 — Lock and Preview

Where: Display Locked = Yes > Ctrl+P > Preview.

Do this: Protect and check the final sheet.

Check: Framing and scale are both correct.

A 1:100 floor plan is at the correct scale but shifted too far left. Pan the view to the right inside the viewport, confirm it still reads 1:100, then lock it.
