Annotation Scale vs Viewport Scale in AutoCAD
Viewport scale controls how large the model view appears on the sheet. Annotation scale controls the displayed size/representation of annotative text, dimensions, hatches and other annotative objects. They are related but not the same setting.
Start here — what you are going to do
Your goal: Understand which scale to change when the model view is correct but annotation is not.
Where to start: Open a Layout that contains an annotative object and a scaled viewport.
Beginner rule: If the model view is already at the correct scale but text, dimensions or symbols look wrong, do not change the viewport scale first. Check the annotation setting or object representation separately.
Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD
Step 1 — Read the viewport scale
Where: Select viewport border > Viewport Scale.
Do this: Note the drawing-view scale, such as 1:100.
Check: You know the model-to-paper view scale.
Step 2 — Read the annotation scale
Where: With viewport selected > Annotation Scale control / Properties.
Do this: Check whether it matches the intended annotation representation.
Check: You know the annotation setting separately.
Step 3 — Select an annotative object
Where: Model Space or through the viewport.
Do this: Check whether its Annotative property is enabled and which scales it supports.
Check: You know whether the object is expected to respond to annotation scale.
Step 4 — Synchronize when appropriate
Where: Status-bar annotation/viewport scale controls.
Do this: Set the annotation scale to the scale required for that viewport when the office workflow expects them to match.
Check: Annotative object appears at the intended paper size.
Step 5 — Check other viewports
Where: Other Layout viewports.
Do this: Confirm the object has the scale representation needed for each view.
Check: Nothing disappears unexpectedly.
Step 6 — Preview
Where: Ctrl+P > Preview.
Do this: Inspect text, dimensions and symbols on the whole sheet.
Check: Annotation is readable and consistent.
Beginner example
A plan viewport is correctly 1:100, but an annotative note is missing. The viewport scale can be right while the note lacks a 1:100 annotation representation. Check the object and annotation scale instead of changing the viewport.
Understand what AutoCAD is doing
Viewport scale changes the view
It controls how Model Space geometry is magnified through the paper-space window.
Annotation scale changes annotative representations
Annotative objects are designed to keep a consistent plotted size across different view scales.
Mouse-wheel zoom can desynchronize expectations
Autodesk notes that zooming can change viewport scale while annotation scale may remain unchanged in some workflows, which is another reason to lock production viewports.

Common problems and what to check first
| What you see | What may be causing it | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| Model is correct, text missing | Annotative object lacks current scale | Add/check the required annotation scale. |
| Text is huge or tiny | Wrong annotation scale/style | Check CANNOSCALE/viewport annotation scale and object style. |
| Viewport and annotation scale disagree | Zoom/navigation changed one control | Restore intended scales and lock viewport. |
| Object shows in one viewport only | Scale representation exists only there | Add the needed scale to the annotative object. |
When you need a more repeatable workflow
For repeatable annotation and linetype output, record the office values and styles instead of fixing each sheet by eye. Keep annotation scales, text/dimension styles, LTSCALE/PSLTSCALE/MSLTSCALE rules and any required REGEN step in the CAD standard, then confirm the result in Plot Preview on a known-good sheet.

Frequently asked questions
Should annotation scale always equal viewport scale?
Often they are coordinated in standard Layout workflows, but they are distinct properties and can be managed separately.
Does changing annotation scale change model geometry?
No. It changes how supported annotative objects display/scale.
Why can the same note appear in one viewport and not another?
The annotative object may not support the annotation scale used by the second viewport.
