How to Use Multiple Viewport Scales on One AutoCAD Layout

One Layout can contain several viewports at different scales. Set each viewport independently, lock each one, and make sure annotations are designed to display correctly at those different scales.

Start here — what you are going to do

Your goal: Place a plan and one or more enlarged details on the same sheet at different controlled scales.

Where to start: Open a prepared Layout with enough room for multiple viewports.

Beginner rule: Change one scale-related setting at a time. After setting a viewport or plot scale, use Preview and verify one known measurement before trusting the final sheet.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Create the viewports

Where: Layout tab > Layout Viewports / MVIEW, or copy an existing viewport.

Do this: Create one viewport for each required view.

Check: Each viewport has its own border.

Step 2 — Set the main view scale

Where: Select main viewport > Viewport Scale.

Do this: Choose the main plan scale, for example 1:100.

Check: Main plan fits its area.

Step 3 — Set the detail scale

Where: Select detail viewport > Viewport Scale.

Do this: Choose a larger scale such as 1:20 or 1:50.

Check: Detail is enlarged independently.

Step 4 — Pan each view

Where: Activate each viewport one at a time > PAN.

Do this: Frame the correct model area without zooming.

Check: Each viewport still reports its intended scale.

Step 5 — Check annotation behavior

Where: Select viewport / annotative objects.

Do this: Confirm annotation scale and visibility for each view.

Check: Text and dimensions are readable in both viewports.

Step 6 — Lock every production viewport

Where: Viewport Properties > Display Locked = Yes.

Do this: Protect each approved view.

Check: The mixed-scale sheet is stable.

Step 7 — Preview the whole sheet

Where: Ctrl+P > Preview.

Do this: Check hierarchy, titles and scale notes for every viewport.

Check: All views appear at the intended relative sizes.

Beginner example

An A1 sheet contains a floor plan at 1:100 and a restroom detail at 1:20. Each viewport gets its own scale and lock, while the Layout itself still plots as the physical A1 sheet.

When you need a more repeatable workflow

For repeatable Layouts, use named standard scales, lock every approved production viewport, and keep one measured PDF as a reference. If several users work on the same templates, standardize the scale list and Page Setup so nobody has to rebuild the sheet by trial and error.
