AutoCAD Viewport Scale Keeps Changing: Causes and Fixes

A viewport scale usually changes because the viewport is unlocked and somebody zooms inside it, or because a custom scale is being created accidentally. Restore the intended scale, reframe with PAN, and lock the viewport.

Step by step — follow this in AutoCAD

Step 1 — Read the current scale

Where: Select viewport > status bar Viewport Scale / Properties.

Do this: Write down the value shown before changing anything.

Check: You know whether it is standard or custom.

Step 2 — Check Display Locked

Where: Properties > Display Locked.

Do this: If it is No, leave it unlocked only while repairing the view.

Check: You have identified whether accidental zooming is possible.

Step 3 — Restore the intended scale

Where: Properties > Standard Scale or Viewport Scale list.

A viewport was originally 1:100 but now shows a long decimal custom scale. That is a classic sign that someone zoomed inside an unlocked viewport. Reapply 1:100, pan to reframe, then lock it.
